The transformed Supergirl trampled her way throughout Asia, and by the time the Justice League arrived, the ferocious golden krypto-dragon was in the middle of leveling downtown Tokyo. But, as the League found out very quickly, not even their combined might was a match for something far more powerful than a Kryptonian like Superman or Power Girl.
Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Aquaman were quickly overwhlemed; with the dragon-like beast breaking through Hal Jordan's energy barriers as if they were made of paper tissue, and pummeling down both the Amazon and the king of the ocean like Superman with ease. Flash was a crimson blur that ran up and down, saving as many civilians as he could; while Batman and Cyborg took to the task of finding out the identity of whatever they were fighting.
"Phew! Downtown Tokyo is clear, Bats." Flash showed up, visibly exhausted by the ordeal of rescueing all of Tokyo's population and relocating them to the 'safety' of a command outpost in the forests north of the city.
"Good." Batman whispered, without looking away from a device that reminded Flash of an iPad.
"So, whatcha looking at, Bats?" Flash said.
"I'm trying to find out what we're fighting with. Hal supplied us with a copy of a catalogue on alien species from Oa's main library."
"You mean these things are... alien?"
"I'm not quite sure. But I started researching them since the very first attack a few days ago. They're entirely unlike anything on Earth's fossil record. So, that leaves us either a genetical experiment gone wrong, supernatural entities at work or some alien species."
"Alien dragons, huh? Why am I not surprised they're attacking Tokyo?" Both Batman and Cyborg gave Flash a death glare, just to let him know his little reference to Godzilla was in very poor taste.
"Great Hera... those things... They're strong." Wonder Woman hovered down, visibly battered from her ordeal. She was missing her right boot, and her right arm bled profusely from a wound that seemed to have been done with a huge sword. Green Lantern was right behind her, carrying an unconscious Aquaman in an energy projection in the shape of a bed.
"Did it escape?" Batman asked, grimly.
"Yes. It flew to the east, into the Pacific Ocean. We tried to stop it, but there's no way of..."
"Diana." Batman stared at Wonder Woman's sheathed sword.
"Yes?"
"Your sword.... did you manage to cut it?" The Amazon unsheathed her sword and extended it to the caped crusader. The sword's blade was covered in a layer of dark, congealing blood. A few drops fell to the ground from the tip. "Interesting..."
"Why?"
"According to Bealian and Chinese military intelligence officers, the dragons are impervious to all weapons known to man. And yet, your sword managed to..."
"It's magical. Forged by Hephaestus himself." Diana said, proud of her weapon.
"I need to run some tests. But i'm guessing that, whatever are these creatures, they're probably related to Kryptonians. Superman's sudden disappearance comes to mind, too..."
Batman's sharp mind was already connecting the dots between the events of the last days. Not only Superman had disappeared, but Power Girl and Supergirl seemed to disappear from the face off the Earth by the time the four dragons started attacking. A brief thought crossed his mind, but the Dark Knight discarded it almost immediatly.
He considered the possibility of the three Kryptonians somehow being the creatures themselves, but that didn't explained the presence of a fourth one. There were no more Kryptonians on Earth, not since Zod and Faora were still locked in the Phantom Zone and Superboy hadn't been seen in a while.
The other possibility was, perhaps, an incident in the Fortress of Solitude or one of Brainiac's shrunken cities... some predator species native to Krypton escaping containment and somehow disabling the three Kryptonians in the process.
Batman shivered with another second thought: If Superman and his cousins had been, say, 'disabled'... who could protect Earth from a species of Kryptonian predators that were to Superman as a tiger or a bear were to normal humans? And worse, what if they somehow managed to breed?
There was a third thought: This was just a dragon, and not one of the largest. Where were the other tree? Specially that huge, black one that tore apart the entire might of the Chinese navy fleet as it attacked Shanghai?
