The power of the Phoenix Force had already allowed Janet to wipe Spider-man's old self from his mind with a mere flex of her mental energies. Now what she had planned for Gwen Stacy was similar. But instead of merely wiping them clean, she was altering and adding to the woman's memories in order to twist her innocent psyche into one as warped as the original Green Goblin, Norman Osborn.

And speaking of Norman, that was where the Hornet Queen began. For she found the memories of that brief tryst that Ms. Stacy had with the arch-villain buried deep  n the mind of her subject. It didn't take too much prodding to alter that event and make it the basis of the new Gwen she was building. It went from a single night of passion to something far more permanent. Now Norman had soon become the true love of her life, the man she was devoted to. She quickly left that pathetic Peter Parker for the brilliant man who had made something of himself in the world, who could provide Gwen with a sense of security she'd lost after her father's death.

As this new path unfolded, Gwen and Norman became closer, with him encouraging her interest in science, which had been something that loser Parker had never done. Her intellect grew under his guidance, but it was a cold ambitious mind tinged with a lurking madness. When he shared his secret life as the Green Goblin with her, the new Gwen suggested that she might be able to help him in his criminal undertakings.

It was here that Janet had to call upon the other powers of the Phoenix Force, as she manipulated Gwen's genes to give the young blonde the same powers of super-strength and remarkable regeneration that Norman had gained from his exposure to the Goblin formula which, in her now altered memories, he had shared with her. Together the two of them altered his equipment for the new Goblin to use. But the two didn't have much time to enjoy this new partnership, which coincided with their marriage.

For Norman seemingly died at the hands of Spider-man after he nearly killed Mary Jane Watson, the woman whom that fool Parker had taken on as a lover after Gwen had dumped him. An enraged Gwen, in full Goblin regalia, lashed out at the arachnid hero, whom she believed has killed her beloved Norman. However, she was defeated and barely escaped capture. Inheriting control of Oscorp, Gwendolyn Stacy-Osborn would prove a persistent foe, whether it was sponsoring the cloning project of Miles Warren, or attacking him as the Goblin.

But in the end, her growing madness and obsession after numerous failures to crush the wall-crawler had made her reach too far. Spider-man discovered her secret life as a supervillainess and forced her to flee the country. It was here that the Hornet Queen found her and helped arrange her return. In exchange, Gwendolyn would serve as a member of her growing Hive.

Pulling back from the mind of the former first love of Spider-man, Janet smiled at her handiwork. Gone was the sweet and innocent Gwen Stacy, who had dared to spit in defiance at her.  In her place was a wildly grinning and occasionally giggling Gwendolyn Stacy-Osborn, her own personal 'Gwen Goblin' who was more than eager to do a little mayhem on the behalf of her powerful benefactress.

Meanwhile, elsewhere...
